The Carillon Sultans 18U AAA season is well underway, as the team looks to rebound after several college players graduated last season.
Burke Heide is the new head coach for the age group, and said he expects little step-back, as the Sultans program continues to produce quality ball players to replace outgoing stars.
“They’re excited to get going, and they were definitely excited to get their first win,” Heide said after a 6-0 victory over Interlake at A.D. Penner Park June 7.

“We lost a strong group of hitters for sure, but the guys that are moving into the senior position are all strong players as well. We have a strong group of 15U kids coming up that will fill those roles as they get more comfortable.”
Quinn MacNeil, a 15-year-old player, pitched a complete game shutout for Carillon against Interlake, earning post-game praise from Heide.
Kaden Coldwell was eligible to play for the Sultans, but the Vauxhall Academy player from Steinbach decided to stay out West and play in a junior league in Alberta this summer. Coldwell has committed to North Dakota’s University of Mary
The jump from 15U to 18U baseball can be challenging for fielders especially, as easier throws on a smaller diamond are replaced with tough plays to get outs. Pitching can also be a challenge for younger players, as they face down stronger hitters.
“You’ve got to pitch, you can’t just throw it by guys,” Heide said.

“I think hitting-wise they tend to make the transition well. As they add strength they get more comfortable.”
The 18U league changed formats last season, allowing for a more competitive regular season. Instead of provincial qualifier games, every team in the province plays a more balanced schedule, with the top six teams seeded in tier 1 of a provincial championships.
Heide said the Sultans are aiming high this season, with the goal of reaching the provincial final again.
The team’s next home game is at A.D. Penner Park June 14, as they host a double-header against Midwest.
