No attempted child abductions in Steinbach: RCMP

Steinbach RCMP haven’t received any reports of attempted child abductions, after social media posts claiming multiple attempts garnered attention online.
In a Aug. 10 post on a Steinbach Facebook group page, an anonymous account alleged three instances were reported to police. However, a RCMP spokesperson refuted those claims.
”I have reached out to the Steinbach detachment and they have not received such complaints,” said Cpl. Melanie Roussel.
She said if attempted child abductions or luring are happening in the community, people should report them directly to the RCMP.
Steinbach Mayor Earl Funk saw the posts circulating online too and reached out to the local detachment’s staff sergeant about the claims. Due to the alarming nature of the post, Funk said he wanted to “get to the bottom of it.” Multiple councillors also reached out to him about the post, he said.
“There’s no proof at this point to to give any kind of foundation to the accusations that have been said,” Funk said. “The only thing that would disprove it is the fact that the RCMP at this time have no no files open.”
He said if attempted child abductions were happening, the RCMP would be called.
Funk said this situation is reminder that there’s often a risk for misinformation on social media.
