LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Goertzen needs to show concern for constituents

I was set to perform at Steinbach Pride on Sept. 13. My partner, our two children and I were all looking forward to the event. It was also an important opportunity for business networking. However, the event was canceled the day before after serious threats of violence were received and assessed by the Steinbach RCMP.

While many local elected officials have made it clear they don’t support Pride events, all of us should be concerned when residents’ safety cannot be guaranteed. On the same beautiful day that Pride was canceled, Barkman Park was filled with other groups enjoying the weather without concern.

Just before the weekend, Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen called for the resignation of Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine after she reposted a critique of assassinated American activist Charlie Kirk’s political views and a call to address gun violence. On CJOB radio, Mr. Goertzen said his concern was that the family of the deceased should be respected in their time of loss. “This is not just a political story, it’s a human story,” he said. “It’s about a wife who lost a husband, children who’ve lost a father… for Minister Fontaine to not understand that and see that first is both concerning and also extremely disappointing.”

I empathize with Mr. Goertzen’s concern for this family. At the same time, they are in Utah, while Barkman Park is less than a kilometre from his office. I would like to hear Mr. Goertzen offer the same level of concern—and an action plan—for his constituents who were threatened with violence this past weekend.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen did release a statement on social media. It reads as follows:

“I have been very consistent in my message. There should not be threats or intimidation against any group in society that is peacefully demonstrating, gathering or in an assembly. And of course that includes Steinbach Pride and all Pride events. It is my understanding that Pride events in Steinbach in the past have occurred peacefully and respectfully for all those who participate and that should always be the expectation for those attending Pride and all other peaceful events and gatherings.
I am not aware of the specific reasons for the cancellation (law enforcement have not shared this with me and I wouldn’t expect them to), but I understand information has been provided to the RCMP and I have no doubt that it will be fully investigated.
Again, I am a strong believer in the right of ALL people to be able to express their views and opinions peacefully and free from any threat, intimidation or harm. That is the very foundation of a democracy.“
