The 2025 Canadian News Media Awards, presented by the Canadian Community Newspaper Association (CCNA) recognized The Carillon as having the best sports coverage for all newspapers in the country with a circulation less than 10,000.
This is the third consecutive year this award has been won by The Carillon.
Judges were impressed with mix of stories, stats and what they called “standout photography that brought local sports to life.”

“From strong coverage of community teams to great action shots and athlete profiles, the entries showed real care and connection to the people behind the games,” judges wrote. “The writing was clear and engaging and the photos showed great timing and creativity. This is the kind of local sports coverage that keeps a community proud and informed – great work all around.”
Carillon sports editor Cassidy Dankochik said he enjoys covering sports in the Southeast, adding getting recognized for the hard work is affirming.
“My philosophy of sports coverage at The Carillon has been to go to as many events as possible in person, so I can be in the arena or on the sidelines like so many of the fans in our readership are,” he said. “It’s an honour to be considered one of the best sports sections in the country for the past three years, and I hope to continue that strong standard going forward.”
Dankochik pointed out that the year being judged saw the introduction of Second Shots, a weekly feature that gives The Carillon the opportunity to share more of their sports photos both on printed pages and online at thecarillon.com.
Carillon editor Greg Vandermeulen said having a strong sports section has always been a priority for the newspaper that continues to provide as extensive news and sports coverage as possible.
“Sports in the Southeast have always been important to residents and providing our readers with information about our vibrant sports scene continues to be a priority,” he said. “We’re very proud of the hard work that Cassidy Dankochik and our team bring to the table each week and are happy to see it recognized nationally.”
