Twenty new permanent digital message boards and 19 highway cameras will be installed across the province.
In a Monday announcement, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor said the new boards are about safety.
“We’re giving Manitobans the real-time information they need to make smart travel decisions, especially when weather and road conditions change quickly,” she said.
Destined for major routes on the Trans-Canada Highway, Winnipeg’s perimeter, and Highway 6 and 75, the boards will be near Emerson, Portage, Thompson, Winnipeg and other key locations.
Eight of the boards will be west of Winnipeg along the Trans-Canada.
Others will be placed in St Norbert southbound, the Trans-Canada at the east perimeter eastbound, at the Ontario border westbound, an on Highway 75 at the Canadian border northbound.
The boards will display live updates on traffic delays, road closures, detours and weather-related advisories. They are remotely controlled and updated instantly to reflect current conditions.
Installation of the boards began in July and will be fully operational by late fall Naylor said.
Nineteen new cameras will also be installed along high-traffic corridors. The cameras will capture road conditions every 15 minutes, with images uploaded to the Manitoba511 website and app.
Naylor said the boards and cameras are important in Manitoba where weather can shift in minutes.
“Whether you’re going to work, heading to the lake or driving across the province, Manitoba511 is your go-to source for safe travel planning,” she said.
