COLUMN: Arts and Culture – Message from the executive director

As a new year of programming at the Steinbach Arts Council begins, we like to take a moment to pause. It’s an opportunity to set goals for the months ahead, but also to look back and take note of what we’ve accomplished together.
Over the past year, the Steinbach Arts Council saw continued growth in participation, partnerships, and community impact. More than 160 programs, concerts, and exhibits brought people of all ages together — from preschool participants to free concerts for seniors. What stood out most wasn’t just the number of activities and events, but the way arts and culture continued to connect people across communities throughout the Southeast.
In our corner of the province, arts programming plays an important role. It creates opportunities for young people to build confidence and skills, supports local artists and educators, and brings people together in shared spaces — whether that’s a class, a concert, or a gallery opening. This past year, we focused on expanding outreach beyond our centre, partnering with schools, care homes, and community organizations to make it easier for people to engage and to offer even more opportunities to learn and connect.
We also saw strong demand for youth and after-school programs, sold-out performances in our concert series, and increased collaboration with local artists. These experiences contribute to a healthy community and help position our region as a place where creativity and quality of life go hand in hand.
Looking ahead, we’re excited about what’s next. In the coming year, we’re committed to expanding free and low-cost programming for seniors, strengthening mentorship opportunities for youth, and continuing to develop therapeutic arts initiatives that support community wellness. We’re also spending time on long-term planning for satellite programming to ensure we can meet growing demand while continuing to serve the region.
Culture and heritage programming will remain a focus as we share the stories and traditions that shape Southeast Manitoba and continue to celebrate the cultures that make our region so diverse. Through partnerships and regional collaboration, we want to keep arts and culture accessible — not just in Steinbach, but throughout all the communities we serve.
As we set goals for the year ahead, we also want to acknowledge the people who make this work possible: the artists and teachers who invest in our students and audiences, along with our participants, volunteers, donors, and partners.
Arts and culture in the Southeast are thriving, and the year ahead offers another opportunity to build on that momentum.
Happy New Year, from all of us at the Steinbach Arts Council.

Steinbach Christian School exhibits “Tension: A Beautiful Conflict” at the SAC Hall Gallery
“Tension: A Beautiful Conflict” showcases expressive and challenging works by Grade 10 and 11 students from Steinbach Christian School. Guided by Visual Arts department head Ryan Polinsky, the exhibit explores how conflict—though uncomfortable—can inspire growth and character. Highlighting the idea that tension creates interest, the collection invites visitors to reflect on the role of conflict in everyday life. These young artists, part of a long‑standing school community, bring diverse perspectives to their pieces.
Plant your visit to the Hall Gallery at the Steinbach Cultural Arts Centre located at 304 Second St to experience this thought‑provoking exhibit. To find our annual Hall Gallery exhibit schedule, visit SteinbachArts.ca/Exhibits.
