It’s clear the Winnipeg Jets have massive respect for the Niverville Nighthawks, extending to before the Manitoba Junior Hockey League franchise won a national junior A championship this May.
For the past three seasons, just three MJHL players have earned invites to the Jets Development Camp. All three of those players have played for Niverville.
Adam Vigfusson joins Nathan Brown from 2024 and Lorette’s Avery Laliberte from 2025, as the Gimli product was named to Winnipeg’s 32-player development camp roster last week.
Vigfusson will have a familiar face coaching him at camp, with the parade of Niverville content continuing at development camp as Nighthawks’ head coach Dwight Hirst was named as a guest coach.
Vigfusson was the Centennial Cup’s most valuable player in Summerside earlier this season, earning a NCAA division 1 scholarship at St Cloud State University. He scored 61 points in 40 regular season MJHL games this season, captaining the Nighthawks to a MJHL and national championship.
He’s not the only Eastman connection taking to the ice this week in Jets’ colours as Oakbank’s Owen Martin will be skating as well. Winnipeg selected the Spokane Chiefs forward in the third round of last year’s NHL draft.
All Jets development camp practice sessions are open to the public at the Hockey for All Centre. The camp will end with a scrimmage at 9:30 a.m. July 3.
Warren Clark, the last player to be selected in the NHL draft directly from the MJHL, returned to Tampa Bay’s development camp this week. Clark was outstanding for the Steinbach Pistons in the 2023 season, helping the team to a championship win.
Clark transferred from St Cloud to Northern Michigan University this season.
