COLUMN: Beyond the Shelter – Volunteers create community

Behind every strong community are people willing to give their time, talents, and compassion to help others. At Agape House, volunteers play a vital role in supporting our work and creating a welcoming environment for individuals and families affected by domestic violence. Their contributions may happen behind the scenes, but the impact they have is seen and felt every day.
Volunteers help with a wide variety of tasks that keep the shelter running smoothly. They organize donations in our clothing closet, prepare supplies, assist with events and programs, and help maintain our outdoor spaces through gardening and lawn care. These tasks may seem small on their own, but together they help create a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment for the women and children who access our services.
One volunteer who has made a lasting impact at Agape House is Annette, who, alongside her husband Les and fellow volunteer Kathy, helps care for the shelter’s gardens. This summer marks the 10th anniversary of their gardening project at Agape House. Annette’s passion for supporting women and children, combined with her belief in the healing power of nature, inspired her to get involved.
“I believe in supporting women and children in their journey to wellness, especially those who are vulnerable,” Annette shares. “Nature has tremendous healing power, and I wanted to share my passion for nature through gardening with and for others.”
Over the past decade, the gardens have become much more than beautiful outdoor spaces. They have created opportunities for joy, connection, and healing. Annette recalls many meaningful moments, including the installation of the Butterfly Garden in the children’s playground. A family with six children eagerly helped plant flowers, water plants, and build pathways. Even the youngest child, just two years old, found ways to contribute.
Other memories stand out just as clearly. Annette remembers watching a little girl pick a zinnia from the garden and give it to her mother, who responded with happy tears and a hug. She treasures the smiles of staff and clients when presented with freshly picked flowers or produce and enjoys hearing stories about butterflies, hummingbirds, and ripe strawberries discovered in the garden.
These moments illustrate how volunteering extends far beyond completing tasks. Volunteers help create experiences that foster hope, connection, and a sense of belonging. Their efforts contribute to an environment where people feel cared for and supported during some of the most difficult times in their lives.
Volunteering also strengthens the broader community. It brings people together around a shared purpose and reminds us that meaningful change happens when individuals work collectively to support one another. Every hour volunteered, every donation sorted, every garden tended, and every event supported helps build a more compassionate and connected community.
At Agape House, we are incredibly grateful for the volunteers who generously share their time and talents. Their dedication allows us to extend our reach and enhance the support we provide. More importantly, they demonstrate that community is built through kindness, generosity, and a willingness to help others.
Volunteers truly create community, and we are fortunate to witness that every day.
