Months after city council first mused about an entertainment component in the first phase of its multiplex design, plans for a new movie theatre were released on Wednesday afternoon. The theatre will be constructed as part of the first phase along with the new curling club. The development will be connected to the east end of the T.G. Smith arena.
The city has entered into an agreement with Pete Schellenberg to lease the theatre, which will be a 170-seat, “state-of-the-art theatre in terms of picture, sound and seating.” Schellenberg owned the Keystone Cinema on Main Street before the building was purchased and demolished (along with other properties) by the Steinbach Credit Union to make way for a new main branch and head office.
The entire first phase is budgeted to cost $5.5 million. About 20,000 sq-ft. will be devoted to the curling rink with another 3,000 sq-ft. devoted to the theatre. City manager Jack Kehler said the costs of construction are expected to be less for the theatre than the curling rink, but the city will delve into the breakdown more when bids are received.
