There will soon be a large empty space at Clearspring Centre in Steinbach after Liquidation World closes its stores across the country. The announcement was made a few weeks ago and it caught employees by surprise.

Mall manager Bob Frey is not dwelling on the loss of the large outlet. Rather, he is in talks with prospects for future tenants.

“We’re working with a national tenant right now,” Frey said. “Over the next two years, you’re going to see several new national names here.”

Shyanne Plett, manager of Mark’s Work Warehouse in Steinbach, discusses Sunday shopping with Clearspring Centre manager Bob Frey, who suggests the hours of operating on Sundays could be 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. which would allow customers to get a few items needed for the day while still allowing employees time to attend church services. That was one of the concerns Plett raised during the discussion; being able to get staff to come in when they would rather be at church. Frey feels the afternoon hours would work well for many people.

And that is all Frey would say, careful to not give away any details of the possibilities.

With the addition of Walmart, Boston Pizza and the Smitty’s lounge to the area, Frey told The Carillon that he is happy with the direction things are going and he anticipates more big things happening to the shopping centre.

“We have land behind Ledingham,” Frey pointed out. “We’re thinking about it, we’re looking to the future.”

Sunday shopping is another area Frey continues to look at. This is an issue he has raised in the past and says he will continue to work at bringing more opportunities to local consumers who would find it beneficial to have a few hours on Sunday to purchase necessary items.

“Sunday shopping would more properly meet the demand,” he said. “We are studying the Sunday shopping issue right now with a customer survey. It would be on a limited basis like 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. We don’t need all day.”
