The Canadian Gold Beverages bottling plant in Marchand might not have been in the Olympics this year, but it stands atop the podium when it comes to making water. The local company beat out competition from around the world to win gold with its sparkling mineral water at the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting event in West Virginia.
Canadian Gold owner Peter de Jong said the secret is the way they filter the water from the Sandilands Forest aquifer with sands and minerals right at the source, creating a product with a zero sodium rating. The company has already won gold for its Touch unsweetened flavoured waters. Everything is bottled at the source near Marchand before being shipped throughout southern Manitoba and to places as far as Hong Kong.
De Jong did not have any time to savour the win at the end of February as he had just returned Monday from a trip with other Canadian exporters to the Gulffood 2014 food and hospitality show in Dubai. De Jong hopes to start sending glass bottles of Marchand water to Dubai and Quatar soon.
Before shipping water to the Middle East, the little bottling plant that could will start making a classic Manitoba drink for thirsty customers closer to home. De Jong said he will start rolling out six flavours of Pic-a-Pop in April when the temperature of the fresh water is warmer and employees are able to mix in the sweet syrup. Pic-a-Pop has not been produced since 2005.
