The judge said he thought he was not being told everything, but sentenced Matthew Porteous in Steinbach court Thursday to unsupervised probation and ordered Porteous pay $40 in restitution for ripping out an RM of Ste Anne man’s phone cord after he pleaded guilty to mischief. Charges of uttering threats, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, weapons offences and failing to comply with probation were dropped.

Police tracked Porteous down to his home in BC on July 23, nearly a month after the June 28 incident last year. Porteous spent a month in custody before being released on bail.

Porteous and two other men showed up looking for a man who used to live on the victim’s property they believed owed them money. The victim went to make a phone call to help them find who they were looking for when Porteous became agitated and ripped the cord out. A neighbour came over and, according to the lawyers, Porteous and the other men left without further incident.

Porteous was also ordered to have no contact with the victim and his family.
