Tache mayor William Danylchuk died late Tuesday night after a battle with cancer at the age of 70. He is survived by his wife Patricia, daughter, and two granddaughters.

Danylchuk was born on the family farm in Zhoda. He would go on to serve on council for four decades, first elected as councillor for Lorette in 1974. The position of reeve was first won by Danylchuk in 1989. He would hold onto that position as its named changed to mayor four years ago.

Danylchuk was also a teacher for 34 years in the Transcona-Springfield and Seine River School Division. Deputy mayor Ross Deschambault described him as instrumental in bringing the divisional office of the new provincial French-language school division scolaire franco-manitobaine (DSFM) to Lorette in 1994. The DSFM now has 24 schools offering full-time education in French to over 5,000 students

Danylchuk expanded his focus to the region as a whole. The plethora of boards that Danylchuk was on included the Association of Manitoba Municipalities as director of the Rural Eastern District, the South East Water Management Association, and the Ste Anne Hospital Board. Danylchuk and his wife helped fundraise for the hospital and seniors’ home in Ste Anne. All these efforts resulted in Danylchuk being awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Danylchuk still found some time for his passion of music, specifically Ukrainian music. He could even be seen on stage at the Gardenton Ukrainian Festival.

“He played with a band for over 50 years, and played many anniversaries, weddings, socials. That was one of his great loves, music,” explained Deschambault.

A byelection will not be called since it is less than a year until the next election. The first new mayor of Tache in a quarter-century will be voted in during the province-wide municipal elections in October.
