The main road connecting Morris to the east is closed for the next two months.

The province shut down the Red River Bridge on PTH 23 at 6 a.m. this morning for an expected two-month period as part of a $30-million rehabilitation project.

The work to replace the bridge deck, immediately east of Morris, will complete its first phase by Aug. 25. The bridge will then reopen to two-way traffic until Sept. 29. At that point, the roadway will once again be closed to all traffic until Dec. 1 as more work continues.

The road renewal project will last until September 2015.

If you need to get across the Red River the next two months, there are alternate routes to take, but it is a distance away. Motorists can head 16 kilometres north through Aubigny or 26 km south on PR 210, near Lettellier. The bridge at St Jean Baptiste, 10 km south of Morris, was demolished in early 2013 after a safety inspection deemed it unsalvageable.

The Morris bridge was built in 1968.
