The school bells at Reynolds Community School will almost certainly ring for one last time on Thursday, June 26.

Prawda residents gathered on Monday night at the school gym where upwards of 35 people begrudgingly acknowledged that there’s nothing they can do to keep the doors open. No students are enrolled at the K-6 school this September.

The Sunrise School Division is expected to recommend the province’s minister of education James Allum close the school.

A decreasing population base, the unpredictability of area foster families and the province’s school of choice legislation, which meant some parents chose to place their offspring in schools in Whitemouth or Falcon Lake instead, has hurt Reynolds enrolment over the years.

Pictures hung up in the school front foyer claim the school had about 50 students in the late 1990s. Numbers have fallen ever since. This past year, there were only eight students in Reynolds.

More details on the school’s fate and what may happen next to the complex will be available in the June 26 edition of The Carillon.
