Red Wing Diner wants liquor

Any Hanover establishment may now apply for a provincial liquor license as a result of last week’s revelation the municipality never had a booze ban in place.

One of those businesses have already stepped forward: Red Wing Diner in Grunthal. Liquor and Gaming Authority of Manitoba staff visited the restaurant on Tuesday for an inspection.

If Clarence and Linda Penner’s application is successful, it’ll mean big changes for the business. The part of the restaurant that was once a house would hold a small lounge, occupied predominantly by VLTs. Hours would be extended past the current 8 p.m. closure Monday-Saturday.

Clarence Penner believes offering alcohol would please his customers, including the out-of-towners.

“I would tell them it’s a dry community, and then they would walk out. But then I’d tell them no restaurant in this town serves, they’d turn around and walk back in,” he said, laughing.
