Three young sisters are determined to see their Grandma one more time. The Froese girls live in Steinbach and their grandmother lives in Paraguay. To close that gap, they need to collect around $6,000 for the trip.
This venture began last week when the girls inquired about another trip to visit their 83-year-old grandmother, Anna Froese. When they found out the cost of the trip, ideas started forming on ways they could raise that money to help pay the bill.
It is clear to see that Maryann, 11, and her younger sisters Angelina , 6, and Corina, 8, are determined to make the trip happen. They traveled to Paraguay in 2012 and were able to spend some quality time with a woman they aren’t able to see often enough.
“When we were there in 2012, she really badly wanted to move back to her house,” said Maryann. “So we helped her move back to her house, we took care of her and cleaned the house. We visited with her and took pictures.”
All three girls seem to have their heart set on seeing this elderly woman one more time before she’s gone.
“We want to get to know her better before she dies,” explained Maryann. “Grandpa got sick in Paraguay and my sisters never got to meet him.”
Steinbach is many miles from Paraguay and the living conditions are very different. While southern Manitoba has experienced a warm summer, the heat in Paraguay is intense with red sand covering the ground rather than the dry grass in Steinbach.
The sisters are quite content to leave the comfort of home for a long journey to a third world country. They just want to visit one special lady.
The girls suspect it may take a couple of years to earn enough money for their trip. Their lemonade stand has already brought in $200 since Saturday and the girls are prepared to sell their goods in their front yard for the rest of this week as well as next week.
“We’d like to thank everybody for their support,” said Juanita, their mother. “It has been amazing. We opened a savings account today and deposited all the money they earned so far.”
