Steinbach mayor on cusp of third term

The official lists are being compiled as nominations close today for municipal council seats and school trustee positions across the province.

Steinbach mayor Chris Goertzen is set to be acclaimed to a third term as mayor after being the only person to submit nomination papers before today’s 4 p.m. deadline.

All registered candidates still have the option of withdrawing their names from contention before the end of day tomorrow.

Currently seven candidates are contesting six council seats in Steinbach. Newcomer Ryan Derksen challenges incumbents Susan Penner, Cari Penner, John Fehr, Earl Funk, Jac Siemens and Michael Zwaagstra in the race which culminates in the vote on Oct. 22.
