Safeway is closing its Steinbach store today 16 years to the month since they entered the market.

The closure of the grocery store effective Saturday at 6 p.m. was announced in June when Sobeys, who acquired the Canada Safeway banner last year in a multi-billion-dollar deal, said the Steinbach store was one of 50 Safeways they were shutting down for “consistently underperforming.”

Of the 60 employees at the grocery store and seven at the gas bar, about 12 individuals will transfer to work at other Safeway outlets, said Blake Crothers, director of communication at UFCW Local 832, the union for the company’s local employees.

He said some employees would remain in the next week to clean up.
