Steinbach RCMP has started a new bike initiative in which bicycle owners can register with the local detachment.
Once registered, if a bike is stolen and located, the owner will be contacted and pick up will be arranged.
Steinbach RCMP recover up to 50 bikes every year and less than 10 percent are returned to their owners.
The detachment is partnering with local bicycle shops to register bikes at the time of purchase. Current bike owners can also visit the detachment to register. To locate the serial number of a bicycle, examine the frame for the imprinted number.
Bikes that are recovered but are unclaimed for up to 18 months are then sold at an open bidding auction at the city’s annual community garage sale, which is scheduled for April 27 at the T.G. Smith Centre, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Proceeds from the sale are used towards recreation programs in Steinbach.
