A subdivision approval by Steinbach city council last week is setting the wheels in motion on a change that will impact Steinbach Christian School (SCS) and Steinbach Bible College.
The two schools are in the process of restructuring into two separate corporations, which will each still own a portion of the property.
Strong enrollment at SCS and the “rapidly changing Bible college landscape,” where highlighted as motivators in taking a “natural progression in the steps the schools have been taking to adapt to their unique situations.”
“Although we share the same facility, SCS and SBC have been operating independently of each other for many years now, as two separate organizations. As SCS continues to grow, we need additional space. As SBC continues to innovate their programs, they need more flexibility. The steps we are taking achieve both those goals,” said SCS principal Emery Plett in a release.
“As a post-secondary Christian institution, SBC’s student body is made up of students from Canada and around the world, with each student making the decision to attend SBC. As a K to 12 school, SCS students live within driving distance, and it is usually the parents making the decision for their kids to attend. Two very different markets,” noted SBC president Rob Reimer.
Under the subdivision plan, SCS will take ownership of the existing school and most of the playground and greenspace area, while SBC will have ownership of the existing dorms and a parcel of green space that fronts onto Millwork Drive. As SCS grows to fill the entire school, SBC may consider the option of building on their parcel of land.”
“Although we don’t know exactly how things will evolve over the next five years, we are confident the work we are doing now will positively benefit both schools,” said Plett.
SBC began as a Bible college in 1936, adding a high school program in 1949. The two programs began operating independently from each other in 1998. SCS has now expanded to offer classes for students from K-12.
