Manitoba First Nations Police Service announced the creation of the Crime Reduction Team in a press release on Monday.
The release, attributed to Dave Scott, Inspector, Support Services Media Relations, said the team was created in response to the growing issues caused by illicit and often violent criminal activities being perpetrated by gangs and organized crime.
“Many of our communities have declared state of emergencies due to illicit drugs that directly diminish community health and wellbeing,” the said in the release. “CRT’s mandate is to enhance the safety and wellbeing of the First Nations Communities that the MFNPS provides policing services.”

Members will provide tactical, investigative and operational support to front-line general patrol members in conducting investigations that require a specialized and coordinated response. Described as an intelligence lead and project based policing it will utilize a variety of methods to investigate criminal activities in and around the first nation communities served by the force.
“The team will utilize both proactive and reactive approaches to deal with the issues caused by serious and organized crime and their illicit activities such as but not limited to drug, human and firearms trafficking,” the release added. “The team will be assisted by the MFNPS Criminal Investigative Unit (CIU) and by our K9 Support Members.”
