The restaurant scene in Steinbach is poised to broaden yet again with the imminent arrival of Georges Burgers and Subs.

The Manitoba institution, which serves up hearty Greek-Canadian fare, will open an Express location in Victoria Plaza next week.

At press time, franchisee Kos Simeonidis was aiming to open March 17 for takeout and delivery. Seating will open once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

“We’re excited to flip some burgers,” Simeonidis said.

George Ifandis, the chain’s founder and namesake, along with his son Dimitri, paid a visit to Steinbach on Feb. 27 to check out the new location.

Ifandis opened the first George’s location in Winnipeg in 1975. There are now four locations in Winnipeg and one in Morris.

Simeonidis said he and Ifandis began noticing Steinbach residents were stopping by other Georges locations on their way home. It gave Simeonidis the confidence to expand.

“They love us already,” he said. “We’re saving people the trip. Now they don’t have to go to Winnipeg or Morris.”

Simeonidis wasn’t worried about opening a restaurant during code red pandemic restrictions.

“I believe in the food and in the name,” he said.

Simeonidis said he is looking forward to bringing Greek-style fries and fat boy burgers to the hungry residents of the Automobile City.

“We want to knock their socks off with these burgers. We’re the home of the fat boy. Fresh patties every day.”

Those patties will also be made with locally supplied ground beef, he said.

“We don’t play games with our ingredients.”

The Express designation entails a limited menu without breakfast offerings.

“All the favourites are still on there,” Simeonidis said.

That includes signature items like the fat boy burger, double hot dogs, chicken souvlaki, and gyros, as well as calamari, poutine, sub sandwiches, ice cream, and milkshakes. The restaurant will also accept custom orders.

“You’ve got to give the customer what they want.”

Simeonidis said he’s happy to create more jobs in Steinbach, a community that has impressed him since the opening of Santa Lucia Pizza, which he also runs.

“I couldn’t be happier to help the community. They’ve been welcoming us with open arms.”
