Residents in the northern part of Mitchell will soon be offered a third bin on their driveways for the disposal of yard waste as a compost pilot project will launch in 2022.
RM of Hanover Chief Administrative Officer Luc Lahaie said the program will be offered in addition to the weekly pickup of material currently offered to the five communities in the RM. Pak-Man Disposals, the company responsible for garbage collection in the region, will be responsible for the collection and disposal at Overton Environmental.
According to Lahaie, Pak-Man approached the RM to inquire if they would be interested in piloting the program. As Mitchell was the first community to take advantage of the garbage and recycling pick up program the LUD was the first to step up for the pilot project.
“I’m glad that council is supporting us in trying this out,” he said.
Cost of the service is still being worked out by the RM. Lahaie said while they hope it will be included with Pak-Man’s contract they may introduce a small price to participating residents north of Highway 52 in Mitchell. The totes will be acquired by the RM in late winter 2022 and handed out to interested parties that spring. After the pilot is conducted the municipality will gauge whether other communities will be included, though Lahaie said the LUD’s of Grunthal and Blumenort have already expressed interest in the program.
Currently, the service will only be offered to yard waste with a plan to include household and kitchen waste in the works.
