Steinbach’s dog park has been in use for some time, but on Tuesday the City of Steinbach celebrated the official opening of the new space at L.A. Barkman Kinsmen Park.
The acre size parcel is home to the community’s first dog park, something Mayor Earl Funk said was a long time coming.
“This is something the residents of Steinbach have been asking for, for many years,” he said.

Funk said the park was made possible in part by a nearby developer who provided an opportunity for the city to hook up to a new water line.
The $50,000 project resulted in a fenced park with play areas, plastic bag dispensers, stick libraries and water fountains. Separate areas are designed for large and small dogs.
Funk is no stranger to the park, and takes his dog Teddy.
“Every time I come here I see so many people with their dogs,” he said. “It brings people out to a place where they get to know each other.”
Funk said he’s pleased that the park is officially open.

“We’re really excited we could do this and add this to an already well established park that draws lots of people,” he said. “I think it’s just a great fit for the community.”
