A collision on the The Trans-Canada Highway because of a wrong-way driver claimed four lives on Aug. 21, resulting in an outpouring of community support for one of the affected families.

RCMP reported a two-vehicle accident one kilometer west of St Anne’s Road in the early hours of the 21st. A press release states a 24-year-old female was driving west in an eastbound lane when her vehicle struck a minivan containing a 26-year-old male, 24-year-old female and 63-year-old female from Germany. All were pronounced deceased on scene.

Two occupants of the minivan, later identified as Angelika and Robert Hartfelder, were on their way home from picking up Angelika’s mother from the airport when the accident occurred, according to a Gofundme page set up by Manuel Stripling, an acquaintance of the family.

Stripling said in a message to The Carillon in the wake of the accident he set up the fundraiser to help pay for costs associated with funeral arrangements and to generally support the family. With an initial goal of $45,000, the page raised over $77,000 in three days.

Further investigation of the accident is ongoing and anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has information is encouraged to call 204-984-6913.
