It’s an age-old question that launched the popular children’s television series Sesame Street since the show’s beginning in 1969. And soon Steinbach residents will be able to ask and answer that popular question, “Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?”

That less than original street name will arrive in Steinbach after city council on Tuesday approved a new subdivision that allows for the extension of Essex Drive and the opening of Sesame Street. The development itself will create 62 residential lots.

While the subdivision, referred to as Lexington Village Phase 6, was quickly approved, reference was made to the street name by Coun. Michael Zwaagstra, who echoed a note written as part of City Manager Troy Warkentin’s report on the file.

“Council may wish to ask the developer if he can tell them ‘how to get to Sesame Street,’” he wrote in between comments on the subdivision and the current zoning.

While the subdivision was approved subject to a development agreement, an easement agreement for the buffer area and the approval of a drain plan amending bylaw, there’s no word yet on who the first residents of Steinbach’s own Sesame Street will be.
