A man who coached rugby and taught at Steinbach Regional Secondary School has been charged with sexually assaulting at least six students on school property in a span of four months.
David Bueti, 41, of Winnipeg, was arrested last Monday, July 4 by Steinbach RCMP, “D” Division said yesterday in a release.
RCMP received several reports of sexual assault involving an SRSS employee on June 17.
Six female students between the ages of 15 and 18 said they were assaulted on school property between Feb. 1 and May 31 of this year.
More female students also came forward to provide information that RCMP said assisted with the investigation.
Bueti was charged with five counts of sexual assault and three counts of sexual interference then released from custody on court conditions.
RCMP said Bueti worked as a teacher and coach at the SRSS from February to June 2022.
Before that, he was employed by several schools in Winnipeg, including six months at River East Collegiate last year and four months at Holy Cross School in 2020. Bueti also taught at Holy Ghost School from 2006 to 2007 and St John Brebeuf School from 2007 to 2018.
RCMP said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone wanting to speak with an investigator can call Steinbach RCMP at 204-326-1234.
In a prepared statement, HSD Supt. Shelley Amos said the division placed Bueti on “immediate leave” when it learned of the allegations. A letter to parents stated Bueti is no longer employed by HSD.
“As with any matter involving staff of the Division, including former staff, the Division is treating the allegations seriously and taking the necessary precautions to ensure that the matter is properly investigated,” Amos said.
HSD won’t be releasing further information at this time but will assist investigators “in any way possible,” Amos added.
RCMP reminded the public there’s no time limit to report a sexual assault to police.
“Reporting a sexual assault can help you seek justice and start the healing process,” they said.
Reports to police can also be made through a third party. Klinic Community Health can receive third party reports from survivors of sexual assault who are 16 years and older anywhere in Manitoba. In this process, the survivor completes a form with support from a sexual assault crisis program worker. This information is then sent to police without the survivor’s identifying information.
For more information on third party reporting, contact Klinic’s 24/7 sexual assault crisis line toll-free at 1-888-292-7565.
