Pioneer Days
After a two-year hiatus, the 54th annual Pioneer Days weekend of festivities is making a comeback.
Events start off with the parade at 10 a.m. on Friday. Road closures along the parade route will take place from 8 a.m. until noon. The procession will begin at the Fire Hall, proceeding west down Main Street, then North on Highway 12, and ending at Stone Bridge Crossing.
Thousands of people attend every year, celebrating Steinbach’s rich history. Parade judges will give out prizes for floats that showcase different themes.
Spectators are encouraged to ‘Bring a Tin for the Bin’ to support South East Helping Hands who will be collecting non-perishable food items. In the interest of public safety, the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce, Steinbach RCMP, Steinbach Fire Department and the City of Steinbach would like to remind all spectators to remain behind marked barricade tape.
Activities held Saturday through Monday at the Mennonite Heritage Village give a glimpse into the lives of early Manitoba Mennonite settlers.
Live demonstrations featuring bread baking, wheat milling, blacksmithing, printing, horse and steam powered activities among other activities can be seen starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Monday and at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Horse drawn wagon and buggy rides and guided tours of special exhibits, ‘Leaving Canada’ and ‘Take a Stand’ are offered every day. Russian Mennonite ethinic food can be enjoyed along with the MHV’s famous waffles and vanilla sauce or Rollkuchen and watermelon.
Live music by bands like Young and Haggard, Cold Hard Cash, and The Cracked Eggshell can be heard in the Pavillion every day at noon. An Old Colony Worship Service is being held on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The MHV is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. More information about the weekend’s events can be found at www.mhv.ca.
Piney ATV Mud Run
In only its second year, the Piney ATV Mud Run is already expecting a large turnout.
Folks from all over Manitoba and even some from as far as Minnesota participated in the first pre-pandemic event.
This year, closer to 60 or 70 entries are expected to meet at the Piney Arena. A final count of entries will be made Saturday morning. Contestants race their ATVs in muddy pits 30-40 yards long for a chance to win cash prizes.
Races for kids will be held in smaller pits, with water only about a foot deep.
The event offers different food vendors, beer gardens and a playground for any children participating or watching. Free camping is available for those who wish to spend the night.
Races begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 30. On-site registrations runs from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. To register sooner or for more information, call Wally at 431-205-1258 or Terry at 204-795-8591.
