SCI receives summer makeover

Construction workers have replaced the students that normally fill the hallways and classrooms in Springfield Collegiate Institute.

The high school in Oakbank is undergoing $6.6 million worth of updates and renovations. Sunrise School Division secretary-treasurer Jody Thiessen said the project that began this spring includes the rebuilding of the roof and exterior walls on the east wing of the building.

The east wing of the school was originally constructed in the 1960’s and will also be getting new insulation, an air conditioning system, lighting and mechanical upgrades, and larger windows to allow more natural light into classrooms.

“The majority of the work will be done during the summer months to ensure staff and student learning are not affected,” Thiessen said.

By the time students and staff return to school this fall, most of the work will be completed. Thiessen said that the school division adjusted the project’s timeline to reflect supply chain issues that may arise.

The total cost of the renovations is being covered by the Province of Manitoba’s capital program for school facilities.

SCI is one of two high schools in the Sunrise School Division that is undergoing major renovations this summer. The other is Ecole Edward Schreyer in Beausejour which is seeing a $2.4 million upgrade.
