A new program offered by WEM (Workplace Education Manitoba) in partnership with Employment and Income Assistance will give attendees in Grunthal a boost in preparing for the workplace.
WEM regional manager Diane Stadnyk said the program was created for people who may not be prepared for essential skills training they also offer.
The program is designed to prepare participants to be successful in life and in future employment.
“The program is designed to increase your skills and confidence in conducting yourself in a manner appropriate in relationships and the workplace,” information supplied by WEM said. “It assists in preparing you for additional training, education, or work, if you choose, through successful participation in the workshops.”
The program is kept to a single two hour session weekly, taking place in Grunthal.
It will cover topics such as self awareness, responsible behaviour, and stress management, in the first part of the four part course and problem solving, decision making and planning in the final stages.
“For some it’s too big a step to essential skills training,” Stadnyk said.
While the program is new, much of the content regarding personal management has been taught before.
Stadnyk said the location for the pilot program was picked in consultation with Employment and Income Assistance, who said they had a need in areas outside of Steinbach such as Grunthal, La Broquerie and Ste Anne.
Fourteen students will take part in the project and Stadnyk said they will follow up with them 30, 60 and 90 days after the program concludes to gauge its success.
“I think the impact of this program will be quite significant in helping people identify what the expectations of the workplace are and helping them implement them,” she said.
Stadnyk said they are also looking for Grunthal employers to come on board to partner with them for the second phase of training in the new year.
“A workplace partner would be someone who would be willing to make a presentation to our learners about their business, the types of jobs they are hiring for and possibly have someone from their business conduct mock interviews with our learners,” she said.
There is no expectation that they would hire any of the learners.
