It was a gold medal week for Steinbach Christian School, as two of their varsity athletes came back from the track and field provincial championships with medals.
Rayna Plett was the region’s standout, bringing home three medals in jumping events at the girls’ varsity level. She won a gold medal in the triple jump event, and bronze medals in the long jump and high jump. Her triple-jump distance of 11.10 meters was 0.7 meters longer than her closest competition.
It was another dominant performance for Lukas Klassen in the varsity boys discus. He threw 38.35 meters, nearly 2 meters longer than anyone else in the event.

Steinbach Christian wasn’t the only school to podium at provincials.
Ste Anne’s Jared Hiebert was a double-silver medalist, placing second in the varsity boys 100 and 200 meter dashes. It was the narrowest of margins that kept Hiebert off the top of the podium in the 200 meter, as he finished just one-one hundredth of a second behind Dakota Collegiate’s Augustine Nkundimana.
The 100 meter was not nearly as close, with Nkundimana out-pacing Hiebert by a tenth of a second en route to a double-gold performance. Hiebert and Nkundimana were the only two athletes to finish under 11.5 seconds in the event.
Logan Mazinke rounded out the region’s medalist performances with a solid showing in the varsity boys pentathlon. The Morris School student finished third in the event, racking up 2614 points.
The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association provincials were hosted in Brandon from June 8-10.
