Armbruster named Providence Pilots men’s volleyball coach

Russell Willms has been busy this summer and he still has more work to do. Providence’s College’s new director of athletics has hired his second head coach of the year, as the college named Paul Armbruster as the program’s new head men’s volleyball coach.

Armbruster will have big shoes to fill, as the Pilots’ men’s volleyball team notched one of their best-ever seasons last year, securing the college’s first appearance at a Canadian Colleges Athletic Association national championship after winning the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference under former head coach Cody Quiring.

Armbruster has extensive experience in Canadian college volleyball. He split his playing career between Lethbridge College and Briercrest before making the leap to USports and the Calgary Dinos.

After completing his university career, Armbruster played professionally in Norway.

In 2006, he returned to Canada to begin his coaching career, where he found success, helping coach Team Alberta and even Canada’s junior national team.

“We are excited to welcome Paul to the Pilots,” Willms said in a news release.

“This program has a rich history at Providence and a community of men’s volleyball alumni who are closely connected. We are happy to be starting this next chapter with Paul and we feel that the program has a very bright future under his leadership.”

Armbruster will look for the program to peak a couple years from now, as Providence were selected as the hosts of the 2025 CCAA national championships.
