It’s safe to say that Ste Genevieve is not known for its music scene. But that is changing thanks in part to a new initiative embraced by the Ste Genevieve Community Centre which will bring musical artists to the community through Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous.

Community centre events coordinator Robin Attas gained her position last year and said as a musical artist herself, she wanted to offer local residents a chance to take in live music.

“There’s already a lot of visual arts and craft presence but not so much people coming together for things like music, or drama or dance for that matter,” she said.

Thus the six-show concert series in conjunction with Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous was born.

The first show took place in October featuring James Culleton and Daniel Péloquin-Hopfner.

A small crowd had an interactive evening with the performers, and Attas said they did a great job.

The second concert takes place on Nov. 25 as they host Old Man Luedecke who is bringing his banjo, guitar and inspiring tunes to the community.

A two-time Juno award winning and Polaris prize nominated singer-songwriter from Nova Scotia, Old Man Luedecke taps into feelings and memories.

“If you’ve ever been brought to tears by a Goldfish cracker and the realization that your babies have grown up, he’s got a song for you,” a press release stated. “If you’ve ever cursed a wet wood pile or used bacon to feel better he’s got a song for that too. And if you just want to tap your toe to lively fingerpicking or listen to a story from a troubadour who’s travelled this country from coast to coast to coast, Old Man Luedecke is your man.”

The show takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 25. Tickets are $25 each and must be purchased in advance either from Ste Geneveieve’s General Store or by e-transfer to sgcctreasurer2020@gmail.com.

One hundred percent of ticket sales go to the performer, made possible by the donation of the hall space and cleaning fees by the community centre which also offers snacks and drinks for sale.

Four more performances will follow the November show featuring a mix of folk, blues and country.

They include Suzie Vinnick on Feb. 7, Andrina Turenne on March 14, Jack Garton on April 13 as well as Naomi Shore and Bramwell Park on May 4.
