Mayor and council was in the awkward position of giving itself a 2.25 percent raise at their last meeting Dec. 11.

Council unanimously approved the raise, with Coun. Steven Stein not in attendance. Council also ordered the start of the creation of a committee that would decide any future changes to indemnities.

Ideas were passed back and forth on what that committee would look like, with Coun. Natashia Lapeire suggesting appointing volunteer citizens representing a mix of urban and rural, adding it was hard to explain to taxpayers that they gave themselves a raise. Coun. Steven Bowker preferred hiring a professional human resources consultant. Specifics are to be decided in the future.

Landmark LUD recently gave itself a 2.25 percent raise, but is still behind what Lorette LUD makes despite Lorette choosing not to give itself a raise, according to Coun. George McGregor.

The last compensation bylaw in 2018 gave the mayor $26,728 in 2019 with two percent more per year until 2022. Councillors made $18,880 in 2019 and two percent more per year until 2022. They get paid more for special meetings, other events and mileage.
