The LUDs of Blumenort and Grunthal are expanding as development hits the municipalities.
Blumenort currently has a population of 2,831 people and has expanded its borders southwards by about 20 acres.
“As our community grows, then our LUD borders only catch up once that expansion has been accepted and started to be developed,” said Coun. Roberto Hiebert. “So we pretty much had some new developments come in the south end of our community and with that development we needed to extend our LUD border to capture that into our community.”

Business and commercial developments along Friesen Avenue have recently been established and Youth For Christ has opened its doors there, as well, seeing a need in the community. The other area that the LUD has developed is in Stoney Creek where high-end residential lots are being developed with large homes and multi-family residences.
“It’s a nice little diversity of our LUD as we’re growing,” said Hiebert.
Hiebert noted the strong commercial and business sector in the LUD and its growth has created jobs which in turn has expanded the residential base. He noted the proximity of Blumenort to services in Steinbach, two major highways, and to Winnipeg make it an attractive destination for a lot of people.
“With some of the services we do have in the community, it’s a nice community to live in…our LUD has worked hard to keep our mill rate fairly low over the years so our tax base is not as expensive as our surrounding neighbours so it becomes attractive for commercial development, residential, multi-family, people who want to set up shop and call it home.”
Grunthal
Grunthal has a population of 2,105 people and has expanded its borders eastward by 98 acres.
Reeve Jim Funk, who lives in Grunthal and was councillor for that ward, said the North Wood housing development in the past year has created an affordable place for people to live with the erection of 10 or 11 new homes.

“The majority of homes that have been built are starter homes that maybe is an attraction for newcomers and young families,” he said.
He also noted Grunthal has all the amenities that one would expect to find in a small town.
“We have everything that it takes in a small community. We have recreation, we have our banks, we have our grocery stores, we have our post office. We have almost everything that we need within a small community.”
