The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has declared Steinbach RCMP free from responsibility after a man died after being released from custody.

The RCMP involvement with the victim began on Oct. 4, 2023. At about 6:30 p.m. police found the man laying on the ground in an intoxicated state and took him into custody.

He was released in what police say was a sober state around 5:30 a.m. the following day.

Around 7 a.m., police responded to a call that a man had been found on Penfield Drive in Steinbach suffering from a possible overdose.

The man was transported to Bethesda Regional Health Centre and then on to Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. He died in hospital on Oct. 11.

The IIU interviewed civilian witnesses, reviewed police records, and the victim’s medical records, leading them to the conclusion that the RCMP were not responsible for the death.

“In considering all the circumstances, the civilian director concluded the officers involved were not responsible for, nor did they contribute to, the death of the male,” a Tuesday press release said.
