For the Carillon Sultans of the Winnipeg Senior Baseball League, there’s no place like home.

After having their first home game of the season rained out multiple times and cancelled due to field availability, the Sultans finally were able to play their home opener June 13, defeating the West Winnipeg A’s 5-1 at A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach to pick up their first victory of the season.

Despite the gorgeous weather on June 13, the game was still up in the air, as injuries left player-manager Nick Wall scrambling to even field a team.

“It was looking dicey all day,” Wall said, laughing.

“To finally get out and to come get a win was unbelievable.”

The Sultans have been challenged this season as they went win-less through four games in the WSBL, only managing to score more than three runs a single time to open the season.

“We have not been able to score any runs,” Wall said.

“If guys are healthy, and once we start getting some guys back from vacation, I think we’re stronger than years previous.”

Wall added the roster has been boosted by the return of a few players who hadn’t played in the past couple years. The reborn Sultans, which returned to play after the COVID-19 pandemic, are still looking for their first championship in the new era.

“We want to win (a championship),” Wall said.

“There’s a lot of guys talking, ‘I got a couple more years, once I win, we’re done,’ but we got to win soon.”

West Winnipeg and Carillon were also scheduled to play again in Steinbach June 18, but the field was too wet to play. The Sultans also played Springfield in Dugald June 19, with the score unavailable at press time.

The team’s next home game is set for June 25 when they host the North Winnipeg Pirates.
