There were tense moments on a northern Manitoba lake for a Mitchell family after their boat quit running two kilometres from shore on Clearwater Lake, north of The Pas in the evening hours of Aug. 2.

RCMP, say they rescued the family which included a man and wife, infant son and two dogs on the lake after they had been stranded for more than three hours, adrift in darkness.

“The conditions were rapidly deteriorating, with winds and waves picking up,” police said in a Tuesday press release. “The boaters were not aware of what direction they were drifting as there was no light.”

A rescue team of three RCMP officers encountered three-to-four-foot waves, before they spotted a blinking light that indicated the boat’s location.

“The boat was dangerously close to a reef, which could have caused the vessel to founder,” they said. “The rescue team had to work quickly to maneuver around the reef, secure the boat and tow it back to shore.”

The occupants were uninjured.
