The senior Carillon Sultans had their Winnipeg Senior Baseball League (WSBL) season come to a disappointing end Aug. 9.

The Sultans took a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three semi-final series against the West Winnipeg A’s, only to lose the next two games to drop out of the playoffs.

The Sultans had their chances in game two to earn a spot in the league finals, but couldn’t hold on. The Sultans took a 7-5 lead in the top of the fifth inning, but couldn’t stop a strong West Winnipeg attack.

The A’s finished top of the league standings this year, and will face the Elmwood Giants in the best-of-five A-pool finals. Elmwood took down Stonewall in their semi-final.

In the B-pool, the semi-finals are set after the Pembina Phillies defeated the South Winnipeg Longhorns in a winner-takes-all wildcard game. They’re facing Springfield in a best-of-three semi-final. St Boniface and North Winnipeg are in the middle of their semi-final series.

All WSBL playoff games have to take place at one of a few diamonds in Winnipeg or Stonewall, as the league requires teams to play underneath lights during the post-season.
