The 2025 rent guideline has been set at 1.7 percent, according to Manitoba Consumer Protection and Government Services.
The rate increase is effective Jan. 1, 2025.
Inflation has fallen in Manitoba, which according to a July 16 province of Manitoba press release was the lowest in Canda for six consecutive months ending in June.
June’s consumer inflation was 1.4 percent, far beneath Canada’s at 2.7 percent.
The rent guideline is updated annually using a formula based on the consumer price index.
It applies to residential properties including apartments, single rooms, houses and duplexes.
The guideline does not apply to rental units renting for $1,640 or more per month, various types of social housing, rental units owned and operated by or for provincial, municipal, or federal governments, rental units in buildings first occupied after March 2005, not-for-profit life-ease units, cooperative units and approved rehabilitated rental units.
The 2024 guideline was three percent.
Tenants must receive written notice of a rent increase at least three months before the increase takes effect.
For a rent increase to take effect on Jan. 1, tenants must receive notice by Sept. 30.
With few exceptions rent can only be increased once a year.
