They may be a brand new junior B franchise, but the La Broquerie Habs certainly didn’t look like it Sept. 7, as they took to the ice for a pre-season inter-squad scrimmage.
Aspiring Habs players suited up in the old senior Habs jerseys to play a red vs white game inside the T.G. Smith Centre in Steinbach as the final action for La Broquerie’s open tryouts. Despite the fact it was an untimed scrimmage, the turnout was solid, with plenty of fans inside the rink to take in the action.
The Habs will be playing their first season in the Capital Region Junior Hockey League (CRJHL) this season.

La Broquerie and Steinbach Pistons legend Dan Taillefer has taken the helm, and the team’s tryouts, three skates in Steinbach, were held under his watchful eye.
“(It’s been) very good so far,” Taillefer said after the team’s scrimmage.
“We had a good group of kids here, they’re all working hard, we’re getting better each skate, which us coaches love to see.”
Thirty players were on the ice for the scrimmage, hoping to suit up when regular camp starts later this month. The first two sessions were more traditional practices, but coaches wanted to see the players in simulated game action for the final skate of tryouts.
“We’ve obviously still got some things to work on, some things to do, but overall we’re happy with who is here,” Taillefer said.
“Everyone’s working hard, which we love to see. Now it’s just a matter of putting some things together and getting ready for our first game.”

The first time the Habs will see the ice will be in La Broquerie Sept. 22 for an exhibition game against Beausejour, with a final roster expected to be named after that game.
“A couple more skates and we’re there, it’s coming up quick for sure,” Taillefer said.
The team will kick-off their first regular season with an away game versus Selkirk Sept. 29, with the home opener Oct. 11. Season tickets are on sale, with a full season $135 per person.
