Volunteer drivers and community coordinators are being sought by Southeast Cancer Support Services.

A new community based, not-for-profit charitable organization that provides resources, support education and support for cancer patients and families in 88 communities throughout the southeastern region of Manitoba, Southeast Cancer Support Services is entering their first phase.

In a Sept. 4 press release, the organization explained they want to provide transportation services to patients to enable them to get to their treatments and appointments in a safe and comfortable manner.

“Volunteer drivers from across the region are needed to offer these services,” the release said. “Drivers do their best to make a client’s ride to treatment one less thing they have to worry about, allowing them the space to focus and handle their journey in their own way.”

Volunteer drivers are people who enjoy meeting people, display empathy, compassion and have good driving skills, reliability and well-developed interpersonal skills who enjoy giving back.

They must be over 21 years of age, have a good driving record, be familiar with maps and logistics and be flexible to adapt to variations during appointments.

They will receive a mileage fee while parking fees and incidentals are covered by SCSS.

The organization is also looking for community volunteer coordinators who will assist cancer patients and their families by confirming drivers are available for them. They also may assist in identifying potential drivers.

Board Chair Heather Jowett said these are essential services for cancer patients and the first step to begin their journey of hope once the cancer diagnosis is received.

“It is always a significant shock, and cancer resonates within every family,” she said. “Southeast Cancer Support Services is proud to help navigate the support each patient needs to make their journey less stressful. It’s all about community helping community.”

Applications for drivers and coordinators are available by contacting info@secancersupport.ca or by calling 204-326-8571.

A new website will launch soon, and a local office will be opened.
