HyLife held its Fun Days on Saturday where it donated $15,000 to La Broquerie Helping Hands.

“Since we’re a food company and our goal is to feed the world we felt like it’s just a good direct alignment with who we are as a company and them trying to feed our community. We felt there was a good synergy and a good partnership moving forward to help support La Broquerie Helping Hands and they try to continue to serve the community,” said Kevin Geisheimer, chair of the Fun Days committee.

Geisheimer said there were 20 applications this year from organizations in the Southeast that were looking for funding. For 13 years the company has donated more than $1.2 million to local charities. This year, HyLife is donating $50,000 to charities in the Southeast.

“What does it do? I think it allows them to dream,” he said.

Jocelyn Gauthier, chair of the board of directors for La Broquerie Helping Hands, said a builder was kind enough to donate a 1,100 sq.-ft. space to the charity to use as a base for sorting, packaging, and handing out hampers.

“Right now, every other Wednesday, we go to pick up from South East Helping Hands and haul everything to the location here, but now having our own building we don’t have to worry about that anymore.”

Gauthier expects to move into the new building sometime in the next 30 days. The new location is 210-C Principale Street.

Every two weeks the organization hands out about 40 to 50 hampers, which feeds about 200 people. The $15,000 donation will be used to purchase food for the hampers.

“I’m completely overwhelmed. It’s actually hard to put into words how we feel. This is needed. We are starting from scratch. We started in April so having this donation helps us to purchase food. We can only go so far with donations, so this will help us with that,” said Gauthier.

La Broquerie Helping Hands started after a board member was asked to drop off a hamper from South East Helping Hands in Steinbach to La Broquerie. Seeing a need in the community, a local Helping Hands was created.

La Broquerie Helping Hands is looking for volunteers and donations. Those who wish to help can visit the charity’s website at labroqueriehelpinghands.com.
