There are fewer open hours and programs at Ste Anne Library after the unexpected resignation of its director last week.

“We just don’t have the staff to keep it going,” said Town of Ste Anne councillor and library board chair Jeremy Wiens.

The search is on for a new librarian right now, but can take some time with a minimum advertising time of two weeks for the position. Wiens hopes a new director can be hired by mid-November.

“In the meantime we need to make some changes to open it up again,” said Wiens.

The library was closed Tuesday morning, with the first post going up at 8:36 a.m. on Facebook. All events for the month of October have been cancelled.

Wiens said until a new director is hired, the library will be opened with shorter hours starting hopefully next Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Véronique Ewen quit for personal reasons, said Wiens.

The library had enjoyed large growth in program an lending use. It had just re-opened Sept. 14 with a new greenspace and the maker space it added earlier in the year. The renovations and new equipment came thanks in large part due to the $65,000 in grants last year. Wiens in June said Ewen played a large role in getting those grants.

“My goal when I was hired and I started was to bring more people to the library, to make the library more relevant in the community, which I’ve feel like I’ve done a real good job at. But it makes it busier, which means we have the same things we had to do before plus more, and the same amount of staff and time and money,” said Ewen in June.
