The search for missing RM of Piney woman Ywanna (Jean) Backman has surpassed a year and Sprague RCMP are looking for leads.
Police issued a press release on Oct. 18, noting the case had been opened on Oct. 19, 2023.
“It has been one year since that call was received and the investigation into her disappearance remains very much ongoing,” they said.
That call came in the form of a request to check on the wellbeing of the 70-year-old Backman, who had last been seen on Oct. 13, 2023.
From Oct. 20 to Oct. 23, RCMP used search and rescue, police dogs, drones and searches working with the Office of the Fire Commissioner, the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association, volunteers from Winnipeg Search and Rescue and residents from the surrounding area in what proved an unfruitful search.
Police reached out to the public a month after her disappearance, again requesting help.
That hasn’t changed over a year later.
“We’re still asking the public for assistance,” they stated.
Anyone who knows the whereabouts of Backman or has any information concerning her disappearance is asked to contact the Sprague RCMP at 204-437-2041, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a secure tip online at www.manitobacrimestoppers.com.
