Over $25,000 was awarded to 19 graduating high school students, 10 university students and six coaches in Manitoba as part of Sport Manitoba’s awards.

“We are thrilled to offer financial support to these ambitious student-athletes and coaches who are excelling in their fields,” Sport Manitoba president and CEO Janet McMahon said in a news release.

“We wish you all the best as you embrace the exciting opportunities that await you both in sport and education.”

Born in Peru, Silvio Sboto graduated high school in Ontario in 1956. He attended Dalhousie University in Halifax where he met his wife-to-be Marjory Pearl Penny, who was from Eriksdale. While living in Halifax, he took up judo, eventually earning a black belt.

Sboto eventually settled in Brandon, working at the Seikeikan Judo Club. He was a volunteer with the national coaching certification program for 27 years, in addition to coaching and refereeing Judo at a high level. He was the chair of the program in Manitoba when he died in 2004.
