Manitoba Hydro warns customers to avoid scams

Manitoba Hydro will reach out to customers who normally receive a bill in the mail by automated phone calls or text messages, but they are warning all their customers to be vigilant.
The message from Manitoba Hydro will inform them a new bill has been issued and provide information on how to check their balance.
In a press release issued Tuesday, they explained what they will not do.
They will not share account balances in automated messages to customers who don’t have an online account.
They will not threaten to immediately disconnect power or demand payment over the phone.
Manitoba Hydro does not accept credit card payments, Interac e-transfers, cryptocurrency or phone payment and will not ask for personal banking or credit card information.
“With the labour disruption at Canada Post delaying delivery of bills there are more opportunities for fraudsters to mislead customers about what they owe, and when and how they should pay,” the press release stated.
Manitoba Hydro said scammers will pose as Manitoba Hydro employees in calls, texts, emails and even in person.
“They may claim that power is about to be disconnected to make it appear urgent that payments be made immediately,” they said.
Manitoba Hydro bills can be paid at a financial institution, either online or in person.
Customer service at Manitoba Hydro is available at 1-888-MB-HYDRO (1-888-624-9376).
Customers can also sign up for an online account by visiting hydro.mb.ca/signup with their 14-digit Manitoba Hydro account number and postal code.
