In what is quickly becoming a tradition in Steinbach, the annual Winter in the Village season has officially begun.

This is the third winter that Mennonite Heritage Village has put on the event and this winter there will be some new workshops and attractions.

“We’re adding some new aspects to the light show and our planned skating path from last year is beginning to be formed. There will be a path around some of the buildings so that it’s not a skating rink surface. It will include a path leading up to the peace exhibit and back to the main area,” said executive director Robert Goertzen.

“And we’re also planning on offering workshops and informational sessions on Saturdays…that’s going to start just before Christmas hopefully by next Saturday.”

Although details are still being worked out, some of the workshops include stained glass making, sourdough bread making, and card making. To see what workshops are being offered visit the museum’s website.

On Saturdays there will be sleigh rides, a fire pit for roasting marshmallows, and hot apple cider and hot chocolate to drink.

“It’s just a relaxing fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon,” said Goertzen.

Last year, more than 1,000 people attended Winter in the Village and for the Winter Carnival that ran on Louis Riel Day several thousand people came to MHV.

“The museum has often been seen as a summer or seasonal venue and we just think we have so much to offer in the wintertime. We have a beautiful outdoor natural environment so there’s snowshoeing, kick sliding, and skating,” said Goertzen.

“It’s just a beautiful setting to be on the village main street and enjoy the lights as well as various activities that are kind of low tech but they’re very participation orientated so that its family and friend orientated things to do with people.”

Goertzen said people should come because the museum is local, offers a discounted rate in the winter, and because it’s a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Winter in the Village will run from December to February 28.
