A Christmas Eve tragedy took the life of a 58-year-old Ridgewood father and grandfather, after the skid-steer he was operating fell through the ice on a pond.

Steinbach RCMP said they along with fire and EMS attended the scene where they were told the man, who was later identified as Harvey Penner, broke through the ice at about 1:30 p.m.

Penner’s body was recovered later that day thanks to the HEART (Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team).

A dairy farmer, Penner also operated Best Level Construction.

His obituary describes his love of travel, his time spent with children and grandchildren and his dedication to his faith and the church.

“Whether he was framing homes, hosting team penning competitions, or lending a helping hand, Harvey’s hard work and love for others shone through in all he did,” the obituary stated.
